Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

The museum and tours and gardens are free for everyone to enjoy. Our events are free. We do appreciate donations.

How do I get to See the Museum or Gardens?

Contact Mary O’Pry for a personal tour of the museum at 303 688-5339 or email maryopry@aol.com. Even though we are only open May through September, people can call and set up a tour from September through December 1st. We are open May through September on Saturdays 1pm-5pm.

Contact Ursula Rogers at the CSU Extension Office (303) 730-1920, for a tour of our gardens.

How Can I Help the Museum?

Your donations of time and money make the many museum activities possible.  Donations or loan of historic items from the Sedalia area enrich our exhibits.  Volunteers are always needed, always wanted and always much appreciated.

Who Owns the Sedalia Museum and Gardens?

Sedalia Museum and Gardens is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.  It owns and maintains the museum building and gardens.  The land belongs to the West Douglas County Fire Protection District.

How Many Staff Members Does It Have?

There are no paid staff members. The museum is run by volunteers from the small board (5 members) and volunteer members.  More members = more open hours.  Join today for only $10 a year!  Meetings are the fourth Friday of the month, except December at 10 am.  Everyone is welcome.  You can visit and see if you want to join.

Where Does the Museum Get Its Money?

Funds to move and restore the building came from donations from the public and grants obtained by the members.  Programming and all costs are still funded by donations from the public and from grants or sponsorships. Since Sedalia is not incorporated, the Sedalia Museum, unlike most small museums, receives no money from city government. CORE is currently a sponsor of the museum.

Help support the Sedalia Museum and Gardens by donating today. The Museum is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization so your donation is tax deductible.

We have an easy way to raise money for the Sedalia Museum.  Every time you shop at King Soopers and use your loyalty card, King Soopers will donate a percentage of your purchase to the Sedalia Museum and Gardens.  Use the King Soopers Community Rewards program and designate Sedalia Museum and Gardens as your beneficiary.

What Does the Museum Do?

According to its bylaws, the Sedalia Museum was formed:

  1.  To establish a museum in Sedalia.
  2.  To preserve and protect the history of the Sedalia areas, and provide access to collections through exhibits.
  3. To maintain gardens for public education and enjoyment.
  4.  To provide special community outreach activities, progams and publications.

Since Sedalia is unincorporated, and its only organizations are the fire department, museum, school and water board, the museum interprets our second mission rather broadly and we strive to include other groups when possible.  Activities besides the museum exhibits and gardens include sponsoring of the Sedalia View newsletter quarterly, taking oral histories and writing books on Sedalia and its residents, developing gardens specializing in plants that successfully grow in the Sedalia area and conducting garden tours,  museum tours as requested as well as  an elementary school interface, a historic Sedalia walk, a 4th of July celebration and ice cream social, a fundraising plant sale, and annual winter community event to thank the community.
